Kazumas Sprite Tutorial

sprite signature tutorial

To start this off we will make a new document, I suggest using a size of about 350*80px. Now on a new layer add a Radial Gradient of two colors that are pretty much close to each other. Have the darker one outside and the lighter one inside. I used a pink, and a lighter pink in the middle

sprite signature tutorial

Now search a nice sprite render and add it to your signature, after doing thatset the fill to 0%. Now go to Layer Settings and add a stroke of about 2px with a darker or lighter color then you used before. Now take out your eraser brush and delete allmost everything of the stroke, then set this layer to color dodge and you should get something like this:

Now repeat this again with a different color and move the stroke a little bit up to the left or right. Then set the layer to Hard Light.

sprite signature tutorial

The next thing were gona do is make a new layer and brush with a soft brush with a nice color that goes with the main color in the sig, which is pink in this case. Then take out you 36px Oil brush and smudge it to different sides and directions over those strokes we just made.

sprite signature tutorial

Now set that layer to screen with a opacity of 30%

sprite signature tutorial

Now make a new layer (ctrl+n) and layer fill it with black, after that get a white brush and brush just a bit on the layer, now smudge your brushing, but don't over do it, then get that color of your sig and brush with it also just a bit around that white brush.

sprite signature tutorial

Now set this layer to Linear Dodge

sprite signature tutorial

Now place your render on a new layer again and use the stroke technique again, but this time erase a different part and set the layer to screen afterwards

sprite signature tutorial

Now do this again with the same color but this time leave a little bit more of the stroke then set it to Lighten.

sprite signature tutorial

Now drop in your render for the last time, and move it a lil bit to the side and focus it on that smudge you made earlier.

sprite signature tutorial

Now were gona make a new layer and brush a little bit with a small brush with black, then smudge it with the same brush to make it look a little scattered after doing so you may want to sharpen it once with: Filter-Sharpen-Sharpen, after that set the layer to Overlay.

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now take out some of your favorite soft brushes of variety of shapes and with white, brush around the main part of the sig, in this case its Ryu's Foot. Set to Overlay after that.

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now we are going to add a C4D render to our sig. When you have done that erase the parts over your render and other parts that you think dont look good

sprite signature tutorial

Now set this layer to Screen with a 38% opacity

sprite signature tutorial

Now do the same thing with a different part of the C4D and remmeber to delete parts that overlap your render or parts you think will look dark, set this layer to screen with a low opacity again

sprite signature tutorial

This step we will place in the C4D again but another different part this time erase more than just the render get a little bit of more out of the way, remember to keep the C4D's moving around the sig and not all in one place. Set it to Screen when you think it looks nice

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Keep it goin again and again every time erasing more than the last time set the layers to screen

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now take out your C4D one last time, but dont erase anything and set it to screen with a opacity of around 60%(whatever looks nice)

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Make a Gradient Map. Set it to Multiply 50%

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now on a new layer brush with a soft brush and a color from the sig. Then smudge it with the 48px oil brush on default settings. Set this layer to Color Dodge.

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Add a Gradient Map again, set it to Linear Dodge with a opacity of 33%

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now add Levels. Set to Multiply 33%

sprite signature tutorial

Now on a new layer fill it with black then brush a little bit with white over the main focus of the sig (ryus foot) then smudge it with one of the oil brushed (there default brushes so everyone has them). After doing that sharpen it once with: Filter-Sharpen-Sharpen, then set it to Linear Dodge

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now add a default gradient map of black and white. Then set it to multiply with a opacity of 33%.

Now add this Gradient and set it to Screen 30%

sprite signature tutorial

Now add a lil more C4D and set to Linear Dodge

sprite signature tutorial sprite signature tutorial

Now add a Photo Filter and set it to Darken.

sprite signature tutorial

Now add a Brightness and Contrast layer to make your sig look good:

sprite signature tutorial

Now for the last time add a Gradient Map again and set it to whatever looks nice to you

sprite signature tutorial

This was my final result, in this tutorial you learned the stroke technique and how to make a great looking sprite signature with all sorts off balance layers
