In this tutorial one step reads to "set that layers mode to overlay". Can you please elaborate on this step for someone who is new to photoshop. Thanks.

Yap, all this means is you have click on your layers tool...and scroll to the top you will see a drop down menu that says normal...click it and set it to overlay. Thats it.
